Q. What makes a self-luminous exit sign "self-luminous"?

A. Each self -luminous exit sign has what are called sealed sources contained within it. These sealed sources (small slender silicon borate tubes containing phosphor and a small amount of radioactive hydrogen) will be luminescent for up to 20 years. The sealed sources generate the light in a self-luminous exit sign.

Under the auspices of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - the N44-3.2000 commitee - and the Health Physics Society, the entire sign underwent the most rigorous set of tests as contained in the committees' test specification for self-luminous sealed sources. The actual test itself as well as the results can be inspected at ***********. These results indicate that there is no safer exit sign. The NRC as well as all state authorities have given approval to put these signs into general public usage areas as well as all hazardous environment locations such as wet, extreme cold, or spark adverse situations.

Q. Is there a way to protect these signs in a rough environment?

A. Yes. We offer a vandal resistant polycarbonate shield that protects the sign from accidental or intentional damage. These shields provide extra protection for your new self-luminous exit sign.

A. Damp or wet locations. Extreme cold. Vibration intensive. Hazardous chemicals or spark problems. The signs are explosion proof since there is no electric power required to power the sign. Since there is no wiring associated with these signs, no fire danger is connected with the sign as well.
